Forum Rules and Policies


This forum is owned by the National Archives Volunteer Association, Inc. (NAVA) and is not a project of the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) which is an Agency of the US Government. The mission of NAVA is to enhance the richness of the National Archives experience for volunteers at NARA in Washington, DC and in College Park, MD in a manner that will support the mission of NARA. NAVA and this forum is not a substitute for, or part of, the official training provided to volunteers by the Volunteer Coordinators or other NARA staff.

NAVA provides social events, docent led trips to interesting and historical places in the metropolitan area, presentations of interest to members, or relevant to US history, or to the mission of the Archives.

You, as a volunteer at the archives, have been approved by the Archives and the US Government for access to specific Archives facilities. Your use of this NAVA forum must comply with the terms of that approval in addition to the other terms and rules here.

This forum is open only to volunteers who have been approved by NARA and hold a badge issued by NARA. The only public facing pages of the forum are those for login and registration. Once your application has been verified for volunteer status, the only public facing page you will see is that for login.

Sharing Login & Password – Prohibited.

To maintain the security of the forum and control access to those who are NARA volunteer badge holders, letting another person use your login credentials is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Allowing someone who is not a volunteer have access could breach NAVA’s commitment to NARA. Any member who shares their credentials with another person will be banned from the forum.

Although the administrators and moderators of the NAVA forum will attempt to keep all objectionable messages off this site, it is impossible for us to review all messages. At the discretion of the administrator, all posted content may held in moderation until approved by an administrator or moderator for posting, such approval does not impart responsibility for the content of any message including those approved for posting. All messages express the views of the author, and neither NAVA, the NARA volunteers, the members of this forum, NARA or the NARA staff nor vBulletin Solutions, Inc. (developers of vBulletin) will be held responsible for the content of any message.

By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws. You also warrant that you will not post any personal political or religious opinions or engage in conversations in the forum about them.

The owners of the NAVA forum reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any content item for any reason.

General Rules


While debating and discussion is fine, we will not tolerate rudeness, profanity (or attempts to bypass profanity filters), insulting posts, personal attacks or purposeless inflammatory posts. Our decision is final in these matters.

Please refrain from posting meaningless topics, one word (or short) nonsensical posts, or the equivalent.

Multiple or repeated posting to increase your post count is not allowed. Advertising, spamming and trolling is not allowed. This includes using the forum, email, visitor messages, blog comments, picture comments and private message systems to spam other members.

Please wait a reasonable amount of time before expecting replies to questions from the administrator(s) or moderator(s). They are all volunteers and have other commitments for their time.

We also do not allow posts or links to sites that are sexual in nature or violate vBulletin community standards. The moderators shall be the sole arbitrator of what does and what does not violate community standards.

Discussion of illegal activities such as intellectual property violations, or anything that could be interpreted as a breach of the terms of agreement with the Archives are not allowed.
